Questions and Answers

Why should SND members vote for you?

I have served on the SND board of directors for 11 years conducting informational graphics and illustration workshops. Through these years, I've developed a passion and commitment for SND that few people in our Society have. My extensive international experience with my consulting and workshops, especially in Latin America, has allowed me to develop a cultural bond with the people I work with. And finally, I have a love for visual communication in all capacities. It's the combination of all this that gives me the insight necessary to take SND in a new direction, both nationally and globally.

What are the most important steps for strengthening the Society in 2010?

There are five things that must be done:

  • Solve our deficit
  • Increase membership
  • Offer opportunities for members and non-members to get involved with SND
  • Intensify our international outreach
  • Expand SND into other areas besides newspaper and print. I not only explain this in great detail on my campaign Web site, http://www.jeffgoertzen2010.org/, but I offer solutions that will work

What would you say to someone considering joining SND?

Join! Because we are going to make SND a more enticing Society and try to give it back to its members. We are going to work hard to make SND a better source of learning in new areas of visual communication. Most of all, we're going to give you the chance to participate in SND and be part of the team.

What are your ideas for stabilizing SND financially?

First of all, I have an outreach program that is proven effective at raising money. I tested this program at The Denver Post and we made $6,000 for our department in one afternoon. I presented it to the SND board in our spring Board Meeting and we discussed the possibilities of trying it with SND. Two board members have already said they would try it at their newspapers.

We also need to increase memberships by reaching out to other media forums. The next annual competition we will include magazines and hopefully increase our entries for the competition. The broader we make our Society, the more people will get involved and become members, and participate in our workshops and competitions. These are the best vehicles we have for generating revenues.

Any final thoughts you'd like to share with members?

This is an unprecedented election for SND. Please vote, and vote for who you think is truly the best candidate.
